Dylan fishing - The Ambassadors

7 Episodes | English | 25 - 30 min

Something totally random happened at BMA. Five students showed up late on registration day and the departments for the VOED class were full. Since they have nowhere else to go, the principal comes up with a plan to make them secret ambassadors and leaders of the school with the sole mission of helping others whenever and wherever needed. They are not allowed to talk about it or reveal to the other students about their mission, making the action seem like it was done entirely from the heart. They will have to struggle to find the best way to make the school a better place without knowing that this can change their lives forever.

Facts about
of production

This project was really a challenge for us because it was our first film project in which we participated, but despite this we did not give up and decided to give the best we could in the stipulated time. Due to the short staff we had to repeat several roles, but this allowed us to learn a little about all the areas of production.

About production

Our Experience

  • Our production team consisted of four people in total: the department head, the department coordinator, and two volunteers/filmmakers (both of us). Due to the limited number of people on the project, we had to divide roles among ourselves, each taking on three or four responsibilities during production. We had three students who supported us when their schedules allowed, but their contribution was reflected more in obtaining props, assisting with some visual elements of the production, participating as extras, and notifying the students about their filming times.

  • The series was originally scheduled to have 15 episodes, which were written, but due to the short production time, it was cut to seven episodes. You can read the extended version at the bottom of the page.

  • Because the series was a project proposal for an Adventist high school, everything had to be produced within the school's standards, including recording times (that wouldn't interrupt class or study schedules), leaving us with limited time to film with the students, who gladly agreed to support the project in their own time. It also included following the rules and regulations of a conservative institution: dress code, language, music selection, story choices, etc.

  • Directing in English, a language that isn't your native language, can be challenging, but due to the language proficiency and the high professionalism of everyone involved in the project, this never became a barrier or impediment to moving forward with the production. Directing in another language was a very interesting, challenging, and enjoyable experience at the same time.

  • A casting call was held, with more than 30 students auditioning. Fortunately, we were able to match all the characters who auditioned with a role that was ideal for them, so everyone who auditioned received a role in the series. Not everyone ended up with the role they originally auditioned for, but they got one that was similar or tailored to their personality. The idea was to have the students' presence on camera so that in the future, the time they dedicated during their school years would be reflected in at least one of the episodes.

  • Production had to conclude before May 2022, as several of the actors participating in the production (characters such as Eddy, Jake, Melissa, Will, Camila, Benjamin, etc.) were seniors who would graduate that same year, so extending the filming was not an option we could afford.

  • The filming was done 100% on location at the academy (Blue Mountain Academy), trying to cover as many places as possible, given that one of the main purposes of this series was to show those interested in bringing their children to the academy, but who don't have the easy access to go there in person, so they could get a clearer idea of what the place is like.

  • All the actors/characters included in the series, both students, teachers, and staff, are part of the student and faculty. These individuals are not professional actors, nor have they ever worked on similar productions of such magnitude, but they all surprised us with their professionalism and their great acting talent. Our great narrator for the series is the History and English teacher at the academy. He had never done voiceover work before.

  • Finally, we edited while recording simultaneously. We edited in the mornings, and recorded in the afternoons (due to the students' schedules). It took us a few weeks after recording to finish editing, but we managed to get the seven episodes of 25 to 30 minutes each out on time. Javier edited the even-numbered episodes, David the odd-numbered episodes, and we both edited the final episode.

  • This was our first audiovisual project of this magnitude as directors. Our debut feature.

  • The official release to the public was on July 3, 2022.

  • Filming this project, "The Ambassadors," was a unique experience. We're grateful to have had the opportunity and responsibility to undertake such a large project. Not everywhere you get the chance to direct, write, and direct a production when you're young, but we're grateful to Blue Mountain Academy for giving us the confidence to take this initiative and turn it into a real project.
