Rodimiro, Arnulfo, and Juan have been hired to complete a job on the outskirts of town. Their sole job is to paint all the trees in the countryside. As soon as they finish, they can return home. But taking advantage of the fact that their boss won't be back soon and the job is relatively easy, they decide to take their time, unaware of the serious consequences this would bring.

Facts about
of production

This project was really a challenge for us because it was our first film project in which we participated, but despite this we did not give up and decided to give the best we could in the stipulated time. Due to the short staff we had to repeat several roles, but this allowed us to learn a little about all the areas of production.

Crew

The filming of this project was carried out with the help of many volunteers who gladly agreed to support this feature film. Many of them had no previous production experience, while others already had some experience. Many of the crew members had never even studied anything related to audiovisual production. The average age of the participants in this project was under 28 years old, with a few exceptions.

About Production

Our Experience

  • This project was promoted with the collaboration of several individuals, administrations, and audiovisual production ministries: Adventus Media, Hope Channel Interamerica, El Asno Parlante, the Baja California Association, the Northeast Association, and Misión 50 Millimeters.

  • The idea of producing an audiovisual project was initially conceived by a member of Adventus Media and a former classmate, with whom we had a good relationship. El Asno Parlante joined the project, creating the story and script, and recruiting the project directors to bring the project to fruition.

  • The development of this feature film began in September 2022, during which we had to generate the story, budget it, present it, and wait for the project to be approved. Once the project was approved, the pre-production and filming planning phase began.

  • Filming was scheduled to take place in Baja California. Although Adventus Media's headquarters (where all pre-production was done) was in Ensenada, production was scheduled to take place in Tecate, Baja California, specifically on the property of an Adventist Church called Rancho Escondido.

  • As part of our responsibilities, El Asno Parlante had to travel to Ensenada where they could work closely with Adventus Media, who were responsible for developing the project alongside El Asno Parlante. The first stages of the project were carried out virtually due to the allocated budget, but once we got more involved in the project and filming was getting closer, we had to move to Ensenada to continue pre-production until filming.

  • The core team consisted of four people: a producer (Sharon Domínguez) and an executive producer who coordinated the project (Jairo Rodríguez). These people were: Samuel Gomez Gámez (producer), Enoc Valenzuela (art director), Javier Guichard (director/writer), and David Guichard (director/writer). With this small but efficient team, all pre-production and pre-shooting coordination of the project was completed.

  • During the filming days, more people were able to contribute to the project, all of them voluntarily (see the Crew segment). This group was a young group willing to provide support in any way they could. They were all young; perhaps only two people were over 30; the rest were between 18 and 26 years old.

  • We had two intense weeks of filming, which were well spent and rewarding. Filming took place during the last week of December 2022 and the first week of January 2023, leaving only New Year's Day as free days to return home and spend time with their families.

  • During our filming dates, we were hit by rain right in the middle of the shoot. Because the story of Los Jornaleros is based on a natural setting in the middle of the forest, this presented a real challenge for the production. For several days and hours, we had to remain locked in the cabins as the heavy rains and strong winds prevented us from filming outside. Thankfully, we had managed to move scenes forward a few days earlier, so these setbacks were offset by our excellent organization. Ultimately, the rains didn't prevent the project from being completed on time.

  • During the filming of this feature film, the entire crew, including the talent (actors), remained at Rancho Escondido, making it a very pleasant and memorable experience. We ate together in the dining room and slept in the cabins; there was no better way to establish a good friendship with the crew than this.

  • Once filming was finished, we returned to Ensenada to begin post-production, a stage that would take up a large portion of this project's time. We, as directors/creators of the story, were in charge of editing everything and leaving the feature film just as we had envisioned it. Once the editing was complete, we flew back to Monterrey so Adventus Media could complete the audio, SFX, graphics, color grading, and export tests. We had to complete and coordinate all of this remotely, but it was Adventus Media who was in charge of putting the finishing touches and magic on this project.

  • Many virtual meetings were held to review the project's progress and process until everything was ready for export.

  • Finally, after a considerable amount of time, Los Jornaleros was ready to be presented. This project served as a key function for the project's sponsors and collaborators. This was a private screening and not open to the public, as the official premiere was held by Hope Channel Interamerica in Miami, USA. Administrators from the Baja California Association, Adventus Media, representatives from the Northeast Association, and El Asno Parlante attended the premiere.

  • The official public premiere of this production is in November 2023 at the Interamerican Division's Communications Congress.
